Sharny Russell Quartet...

SHARNY RUSSELL – composer, vocalist, pianist.

“Fantastic performance.  Sharny shines bright - entertaining, funny, uber talented and a breath of fresh air…” is how Sharny has been described.

Sharny Russell is a seasoned Australian jazz artist who has overcome major injuries
from a life-changing car accident earlier in her life and maintained an albeit quiet presence on the
Australian jazz scene. A singer, pianist and composer of unique abilities, she has recorded on the
ABC label and won the APRA Jazz Award. She hails from a majorly talented family of jazz musicians and speaks the music like it was a native tongue. Her synergistic flow on piano and voice together is breathtaking and totally accessible. So are her original songs – several of them being in the Australian Jazz Real Book.

Her album “A Good Thing On Hold” was the best-selling ABC jazz album for a long time,
and she counts jazz legends (the late) Ray Brown and James Moody, plus Seekers singer Judith Durham among her most ardent fans.

She has recorded two albums (Velvet Jazz & Velvet Live) with George Golla, performed with James and John Morrison, James Sherlock, Steve Newcomb, Vince Jones, Galapagos Duck, Andy Firth, and toured with Grace Knight and Don Rader. She regularly performs with flugel horn player, John Hoffman, and guitarist Jim Kelly.

In 2017 Sharny released her latest record, “Comes A Time”, launching the album at Stonnington Jazz Festival,Melbourne, and touring the rest of the capital cities. She also performed at Melbourne Women’s international Jazz Festival in November.

Sharny has written a song to address global violence against women entitled “Crossing The Line and a stunning lyric video was commissioned last year.

Sharny is a recognised educator in the Australian jazz community and was on staff at Queensland Conservatorium of Music Griffith University for 10 years and now senior vocal teacher at the Jazz Music Institute. Award winning singers such as Kristin Berardi, Megan Washington, Elly Hoyt and Eurovision runner up Dami Im have all been Sharny’s students.

“ … the relaxed, attractive and secure vocal talents of Sharny Russell ...extreme class. You know you're in good hands.” Shane Nichols, Financial Review.

“… Sharny is unique in Australian jazz... she could be one of the world’s most important scat singers.”   Eric Myers, veteran jazz critic.

“…. standards alongside superbly written originals, all voiced by a superior singer.” Barry O’Sullivan, Jazz Australia

“… delivers with warmth, charm and perkiness.”  Nik Fotakis, Australian Jazz

“... the very beautiful talents of Sharny Russell, who plays fabulous piano, and her singing & songs just make you smile!”    Michelle Nicolle

“ … it is the magic in her voice that one remembers most. Smooth and pure, plus her nationally recognised scatting prowess.”  John Morrison, drummer.
